Mud Fever is a painful disease that affects the lower legs of horses. It usually occurs when horses are subject to wet and muddy conditions but there can be exceptions to that rule. It mainly affects white limbs with pink skin and comes in the form of scabs on heels and pasterns and in worse cases further up the leg too. Some horses are more prone to Mud Fever than others but there are treatments available for those unlucky horses affected.
Firstly you will want to clean the area with a good horse bactericidal/surgical shampoo and remove some of the scabs if possible. Then use a barrier cream, dry the area first then apply a good layer of cream (repeat daily). The Mud Fever barrier creams will help to soothe and heal the painful skin whilst creating a breathable barrier to keep out further infection.
