A schooling whip is used for schooling a horse. It is long enough to give a tap or tickle to the side of the horse without taking the hand from the rein. There are various lengths available but the usual length is about 100cm or 110cm. When using a schooling whip at a competition it is important to read the rules especially when you are competing at dressage. Whips may not be allowed at all during the test in some cases but can often be used for warming up. The length is measured from the top of the handle to the end of the whip but does not include the lash. A comfortable grip is very important when choosing a schooling whip as it needs to fit in your hand including the rein.
