Martingales were designed to help teach horses not to raise their heads too high when being worked. Horses usually raise their head to avoid an instruction or particular task you are asking them to do. Martingales can help by allowing your horse to work comfortably, only applying pressure through the reins and down on the bit when they raise their head too high. Make sure the martingale is never too tight or even too small otherwise it may cause unnecessary discomfort to your horse.
Breastplates are used predominantly for jumping, more commonly Show jumping, to prevent the saddle from moving or slipping back during the movements of a jump. Sometimes the extreme stretching and exertion of jumping can mean the girth is not quite enough to keep the saddle in place that is where a breastplate comes in. Both martingales and breastplates come in various colours and styles to match your existing tack.
