Bits have been used for centuries dating back as far as 18th century BC and earlier. They offer the foundations of communication between horse and rider, providing necessary control and steering. There are various types of bits with different mouthpieces and bit rings that range in severity, to accommodate different requirements and types of horses.
From the traditional and very commonly used snaffles which work with a direct pressure, through to curb bits and bits with leverage. Bits with leverage include gags which create poll pressure using long shanks (long bit rings, with one or more rings), the longer the shank the more pressure is applied and more severe the bit. Bits can come in different materials too; sweet iron is a warmer metal than stainless steel; it helps encourage salivation and acceptance of the bit. If you compete (especially dressage), remember to check which bits are allowed for the competitions you wish to participate in.
