Over Reach boots are designed to protect your horse from over reaching, which is when the hind legs can strike the heel of the front leg causing a nasty injury. Over reaching happens most often when a horse is jumping or in muddy conditions, and can often result in the front shoe being pulled off. Sometimes they are also used when travelling particularly when a horse is likely to stand on himself or is travelling with a companion. They can even be used when turning out a lively horse that will play and perhaps injure himself. Some makes of over reach boots have special shaping to avoid them rotating around the hoof, keeping them secure. They are usually secured by a touch close fastening, but some are pull on; a good tip is to soak them in hot water which makes the rubber more flexible and easier to put on.
