Some horses are prone to getting sore hocks, usually caused when lying down in their stable overnight. Protective boots will help to avoid this problem combined with a thick bedding or rubber matting. It is important to get a good fit otherwise the boots will tend to slip down and they are usually secured by touch and close fastening. If the boots have three straps a good tip is to secure the centre strap first then the outer ones, or if there are only two straps the top one first. They can also be used when travelling to avoid knocks and bumps.
There are two types of knee boots available, one type the Free Knee boots which is generally used on your horse when travelling for protection from bumps and knocks, and the other Skeleton Knee boots are used when riding. The latter is for use during road work to protect a horse if he trips and falls on hard surfaces. Knee boots are designed to protect the delicate knee joint against injuries from those kinds of accidents.
The Prolite pastern wrap has been designed for use on this awkward area of your horses' leg. It has been recommended as a veterinary product for use in the treatment of mud fever and cracked heels. It is used to protect and seal the pastern from water and dirt. A pastern ring is used when a horse is prone to brushing and injuring himself in this area and is made from rubber.
