Sweet Itch can affect horses in varying degrees, with some being more severe than others. It is a very uncomfortable allergic reaction caused by the saliva of the Culicoides Midge, which causes horses to relentlessly rub and scratch themselves on anything they can, trees, posts, gates and stables etc. It most commonly occurs in the horse's mane and tail, but can spread onto their neck and hind quarters.
You can help to prevent Sweet Itch with the use of a product such as Carr, Day and Martin "Killitch" which if applied liberally on a daily basis and early enough before symptoms start, can prevent midges from landing on and biting your horse. Other products help to soothe and repel the midges if Sweet Itch has already set in, for example Net-Tex Itch stop salve complete. Soothing and healing the existing sores can help to break the cycle of rubbing and hair loss.
