Some horses naturally struggle to maintain a healthy weight, breeds such as Thoroughbreds are well known for this. Other factors that may contribute to weight loss in horses are stressful situations such as moving yards and cold weather during winter.
Many great conditioning feeds are on the market, from ones you soak (e.g. alfabeet and calm and condition) to conditioning mixes, cubes and chaffs; with added oil etc. Oils such as Soya and Linseed are commonly used in conditioning feeds. They have many beneficial qualities such as slow releasing energy helping to maintain calm behaviour, whilst promoting condition and a healthy shiny coat.
Conditioning feeds offer good quality sources of protein to promote muscle tone and topline and are often non-heating and/or cereal free. The best way to encourage weight gain is to feed little and often (where ever possible); include a good quality conditioning feed and chaff (following daily feeding guidelines), with plenty of hay and fresh water.
