Laminitis is a very painful and dangerous disease of the hoof for horses and ponies. There are many suspected causes of Laminitis but one of the more common ones is excessive feeding of high starch, cereal rich feeds.
For a horse or pony prone to Laminitis prevention should be paramount. Laminitic prone horses in work especially will still require their essential vitamins and minerals; you can provide these through improved suitable feeds or supplements.
Complete feeds such as "Happy Hoof" or "Healthy Hooves" are very palatable whilst having low sugar, starch and minimal calories and contain biotin for hoof health. They are a cube and chaff all in one easy feed. Fibre is essential for horses and for maintaining a healthy hind gut, so "High Fibre Cubes" or unmollased "quick soaking" sugar beets are great sources of this. If your Laminitis prone horse requires condition then "alfabeet" is a great (Laminitis trust approved) feed that promotes condition.
