Some horses can become excitable and have behaviour problems due to their diet. Some "hard feeds" contain cereals such as Oats or Barley which have been known to "Heat up" horses. This is because cereals such as Oats and Barley contain higher levels of starch and faster releasing, more concentrated sources of digestible energy. Sugar or Molasses can have the same effect too.
If you know your horse is sensitive to cereals or sugar then look out for the many great feeds on the market aimed at excitable horses. Often described as cooling or calming feeds, they are low in starch and sugar, or cereal and molasses free. Feeds such as Cool Mix and Horse and Pony cubes have added levels of magnesium for calming too. Deficiencies in magnesium can cause excitable behaviour. Creating your feeding regime with non-heating feeds can really help to promote more relaxed and calmer behaviour.
